Sustainable Water Management – In the Times of Climate Change
Water - we all need it, but many are lacking it!
Climate change is increasing the difficulties of water management globally. The time for finding sustainable solutions is now. A symposium with different speakers highlighting the difficulties of water management in South Asia and Sweden. Perspectives from researchers and development workers.
Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET) and Svalorna Indien Bangladesh invite to a symposium about Sustainable Water Management.
According to water.org 93 million people lack access to safe water in India and Bangladesh. During this event researcher Ted Svensson from SASNET, executive director of Svalorna Alexandra Klang and the partner organisation Keystone Foundation will present their knowledge about the complex problems around water management, water supply and water safety in Southeast Asia.
But also here in Sweden we experience water shortages in summer and floodings in winter as a result of the progressing climate change. More rain on less days leaves us with new difficulties we need to tackle. Expert Peder Hjorth shares his insights from more than 50 years of research within the field of water management.
We round up with a panel discussion with all speakers where we will get to hear their combined knowledge about this pressing issue.

About the hosts:
Svalorna Indien Bangladesh:
Swalorna Indien Bangladesh was founded in 1959 and since its inception has worked together with those affected by poverty and injustice.
Our vision is a just world, free from poverty, where people with the power to influence their own lives live in solidarity with each other and in a long-term, sustainable interaction with nature.
We work from a rights perspective which means that people themselves are involved and drive the change in their lives. That is why we work together with local organizations that work with those who are poor or affected by injustice.

Keystone Foundation:
Our research and action are driven by the goal to achieve livelihood security for indigenous communities, agriculture and food security, land and community rights, community health and development, and conservation of biodiversity.
Recognising the interdependence of earth’s natural systems, our work focuses on the socio-ecological growth of all life in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR). Over time, our scope has transcended the boundaries of these hills to include tribal populations in other parts of the country and collaborations with allied organisations, both national and international, that share our ethos and vision.

Swedish South Asian Studies Network:
SASNET is an organisation for cooperation between faculties, departments and individual researchers that are engaged in research on South Asia. The overarching purpose of the organisation is to promote research on South Asia.
Within this framework, SASNET is also to pursue information and development activities, support faculty and department-wide cooperation at Lund University and work to establish and maintain contact between Lund University and other stakeholders within and outside Sweden that are engaged in the field.

Divison of Water Resources Engineering:
In Water Resources Engineering, research is pursued on how water resides and is transported in nature and in urban systems.
Studies are carried out on the movement of rainwater through land and foundations, how rain and melted snow reach rivers, flooding and the design of systems to reduce the consequences of flooding, as well as on how water flows, the spread of pollutants, and erosion along open coasts, rivers and lakes.
We also work with Integrated Management and Planning, that is how different sectors of society must work together to find optimal solutions to various water-related challenges. The research is of strong international character and takes place in collaboration with many researchers and projects around the world.
Peder Hjorth has been part of the Division of Water Resources Engineering for a long time and has conducted research in several areas of the world, mostly on sustainability and water management.

This event is part of Sustainability Week 2023, an annual event organised in collaboration between Lund University and Lund Municipality. This year, over 60 lectures, guided tours, exhibitions, and more are arranged.
