Coastal Perspectives – A discussion on coastal protection and management in the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden
Welcome to a joint guest researcher lecture and seminar with Pufendorf IAS International Fellows Sierd de Vries, Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Lena Rubensdotter, Geological Survey of Norway together with Caroline Hallin, coordinator of the Pufendorf IAS Theme Coastal Perspectives, Lund University
In the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, coasts are important for the economy, culture, biodiversity, and recreation. Climate change, rising sea levels, and increasing coastal development place coasts at the focal point of climate adaptation challenges. Coastal societies face difficult decisions that will have an impact over long timescales and must be made under large uncertainty about future conditions.
The three countries have varying coastal geology and processes, and different coastal protection and management strategies. In this seminar, we present our different perspectives on coastal risks, coastal protection, and climate change adaptation strategies and discuss lessons learned that can benefit sustainable development.
