Breakfast talk: New Narratives, the role of the arts in the climate crisis
What role can artistic practises play in ongoing global crises such as climate change and biodiversity loss? And how do art and science connect regarding these issues?
Welcome to a conversation between sustainability scientist Diego Galafassi and artist Emilia Bergmark.
In recent times, scientists have shown an increasing interest in exploring the potential benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration with artists for communication and transdisciplinary processes. Alongside this, there has been a significant increase in the number of artists who are developing innovative practices and addressing climate and biodiversity issues.
In this session, artist Emilia Bergmark will present some of her multimedia artworks that responds to the biodiversity crises. In a conversation with Diego Galafassi from Lund University Centre for Sustainabilty Studies (LUCSUS), they will discuss the multiple roles that artistic practices can play in catalyzing and supporting sustainability transformations.
About Emilia Bergmark
Emilia Bergmark is a Swedish artist working in Copenhagen. She will be introducing us to everything from an angry monologue by a honey-bee suffering from burnout, to a flower-bouquet ’speaking’ about economy in the Language of Flowers. Bergmark uses anthropomorphism and storytelling as a vehicle for untangling knottier themes such as the biodiversity crises. Can an art practice that favors playfulness and absurdist modes be serious about communicating the climate crisis?

About Diego Galafassi
Diego Galafassi is a Brazilian sustainability scientist at Lund University's LUCSUS. He leads the projects Arts For Transformations and WildTech, examining the role of emerging media on sustainability transformations. He recently co-hosted the Creative Climate Leadership program Scandinavia with Julie's Bicycle, which explored the future of the creative sector in Scandinavia. Additionally, Diego is a director and producer of documentaries, new media, participatory performances and Sundance Institute New Frontier Lab Programs Alumni within Sundance's "Future of Culture" initiative.
