Dialogue Forum on Science Denial
Do you want to learn more about science denial and how to cope with it? The Dialogue Forum on Science Denial will be arranged in a collaboration between Uppsala University, Sustainability Forum and the Agenda 2030 Graduate School. It aims to spread knowledge about and discuss what science denial is, what causes it, and how it manifests itself.
As these issues can be problematic in the early stages of an academic career, the dialogue is primarily aimed at young researchers (PhD students and post-docs). Still, senior researchers are also welcome to participate.
The Dialogue Forum will be chaired by Mikael Karlsson, Senior Lecturer in Climate change Leadership and Associate Professor in Environmental Science, and Daniel Lindvall, PhD in Sociology, from Uppsala University. Mikael Karlsson has extensive experience in research on climate policy and climate denial and is a recurring expert in government inquiries. Daniel Lindvall's research lies at the interface between democracy and climate issues, where questions of democratic participation and knowledge are key aspects.
The Dialogue Forum will begin with a short lecture by Mikael Karlsson and Daniel Lindvall, with an emphasis on climate denial, and then move to an open discussion where participants will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect on science denial. The dialogue forum consists of an open discussion and exercises to increase understanding of science denial and strategies to address it.
Questions guiding the discussion
- What is science denial?
- Who are the people who criticise research findings on an unscientific basis?
- What strategies are available to counter/respond to people who criticise one's research or research results in general on an unscientific basis?
- How does a researcher deal with time-consuming questioning, harassment and threats?
The dialogue forum will be held on-site and in English. Spaces are limited to 30 participants.
