My background is within environmental engineering, focusing on wastewater treatment. After graduating from Environmental and Water engineering in Uppsala, I have been working a few years within the water and wastewater sector in Sweden.
About my research project
My research project is about wastewater reuse in a Swedish context. Stricter requirements for the treated wastewater released in nature, and water scarcity in some areas, raise the question of wasterwater reuse where it is not a common solution. The treated wastewater can potentially be used in different areas, such as for drinking water, for irrigation or in industrial applications. Safe drinking water and sanitation is essential for human life and is crucial to achieve a sustainable urbanization.
My project is among others connected to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to good health and well-being (SDG 3), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and life below water (SDG 14). In SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), wastewater reuse is specifically mentioned as one of the target indicators.
Since my background is in engineering, my focus will be on the design and evaluation of the technical treatment process, based on water quality. However, other questions that need to be addressed in the discussion about wastewater reuse regards legislation, economy and social acceptance.
