Sustainability in the light of risks

March 21 - May 24 2024, Faculty of Engineering (7,5 ECTS)

In the last years, it is evident that local and global risks have materialized into adverse events with severe consequences for our society. Communities, businesses, authorities, and people in Sweden, Europe, and worldwide are affected by and need to handle the consequences of various events such as food crises, disturbances in global logistics, pandemic diseases, hydrological and meteorological hazards like floods, droughts, water scarcity and hurricanes, and, not the least, social unrest, terror, and war. How do we plan for and manage risks and, at the same time, keep sustainable development in focus? What are the most important challenges for sustainable development in the light of risk management? Depending on who you ask, you will get very different answers. To have a chance at reaching this, we need to understand each other’s views on sustainability better and realize the limitations of our own position. With this PhD course, we will dig deep into how sustainability is connected to risk management. We will look at what kind of future solutions and ideas must be developed and implemented and our roles as researchers. It is envisioned as a starting point for discussions and participants' reflections on their own and others’ approaches to the concept of sustainability.

Nature-based solutions at the Climate-Biodiversity-Health Nexus: Social and Natural Science Perspectives

15-19 April 2024, Lund University (3 ECTS)

(updated 26/1) This course incorporates social and natural science perspectives on nature-based solutions (e.g., environmental psychology, ecology, physical geography, epidemiology, human rights and governance). It thereby aims at broadening disciplinary boundaries and provides a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to the climate-biodiversity-health nexus and proposed solutions within it (i.e., nature-based solutions). It aims at evaluating these solutions critically and fostering an understanding of challenges, trade-offs, and synergies when trying to solve complex global issues.

Degrowth and sustainability pathways

May 20 - June 10 2024, Faculty of Social Sciences (7,5 ECTS)

In the context of a climate emergency, there is an increasing demand from society and students to learn about societal models (including welfare provision) that function without economic growth. In this context, degrowth aims for a multi-scalar transformation beyond the growth-oriented economic paradigm to achieve socio-ecological sustainability. It primarily emphasizes the downsizing aspects of production and consumption but also alludes to the pathways of a society that can thrive or manage without relying on growth. This course will inform these pathways by placing wellbeing for all species and natural systems at the center and rethinking our social systems independent of economic growth in fields such as work, culture, civil society, governance and decision-making.
