Two weeks in July were spent roaming around campus and the surrounding region, Skåne, that has an ambition to become the world’s most innovative region. What better place then, for the students to be immersed in the Nordic approach to climate action while learning how to work together to solve some of the most pressing issues of today.

During the introductory days, the coaches Galina Emelina and Balázs Kurucz made sure all students became comfortable around each other through fun and engaging games both in- and outdoors. “With a group consisting of students from all over the world, all entirely new to each other, it is important to establish a sense of safety from the start. Overcoming the fear of looking stupid in front of the group is crucial if we want to progress in our thinking,” Galina Emelina explained.

The mixing of nationalities, cultures and backgrounds is an important aspect of the Journey, and something the organisers strive to achieve. Working together with people very different from yourself, with other experiences to draw on, strengthens the basis for developing solutions that are both sound and unique. Examples of this come up continuously throughout the Journey, and, as the two weeks in Lund progressed, they increasingly reflected the students’ steep learning curve.

This learning was facilitated through sessions with some of the most inspiring people within innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability that the Nordics have to offer, site visi [Augustenborg, Malmö, Sweden] ts to frontrunners within the application of sustainable technologies and systems thinking, as well as intensive group work sessions with increasingly qualified and critical feedback from fellow students. At the end of each day, time was set aside for reflection on the content and learnings of the day, before summing up with an often humorous “news of the day” section.
